Health Alert (COVID-19 Update #3) – U.S. Embassy Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei

Health Alert – U.S. Embassy Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei (March 19, 2020)

Location:  Brunei, countrywide

Event:  On March 18, the Brunei Ministry of Health confirmed 68 cases of COVID-19 in Brunei Darussalam.

The government of Brunei Darussalam has implemented additional enhanced screening and quarantine measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19.  With the exception of Bruneian citizens and residents, Brunei has barred admission to travelers who have recently visited Iran, the PRC’s Hubei province, and all European countries, including the United Kingdom.  Additionally, the government has instituted a 14-day self-isolation requirement for all travelers entering Brunei from abroad.

Citizens, permanent residents, and other residents of Brunei, including foreign citizens who hold green identity cards, require approval from the Prime Minister’s Office in order to leave the country.  This policy does not apply to tourists or other visitors who do not hold Brunei-government-issued identity cards.  Residents may apply for permission to leave the country by emailing and including scanned copies of any relevant documents.  Please see the website of the Prime Minister’s Office for more information.

Travelers should be prepared for additional travel restrictions to be put into effect with little or no advance notice.  Visit the website of the Brunei Ministry of Health for the latest information on these new measures.
