Pre-Departure Orientation for U.S.-Bound Students

The Embassy of the United States of America in Brunei Darussalam, through its EducationUSA advising service, held a pre-departure orientation for all U.S.-bound students on June 4, 2021 at the Mawar Satu Hall in Mulia Hotel Brunei in Kg. Anggerek Desa.

About 50 scholarship and self-funded students who are preparing to travel to the United States to further their education, and their parents, attended the event. U.S. Embassy Chargé d’ Affaires Emily Fleckner congratulated the students on their admission to several outstanding U.S. universities to pursue studies in a diverse range of disciplines.

“The United States remains the top destination for international students in the world – a reflection of the quality, diversity and innovation of American higher education. With life in America rapidly returning to normal under a successful vaccination drive, we are confident the United States will remain the educational destination of choice for students from across the globe,” said Chargé d’ Affaires Fleckner.

The Embassy’s Consular Chief, Jeff Austin, provided a briefing on student visa applications and processes, as well as COVID-19 guidance on traveling to the United States. He also discussed options for practical training for students after they complete their degrees to gain work experience in the United States.

In addition, the outbound students interacted with current and returning students to learn more about their living and education experiences in America, including health, safety, and security on campus. Among the alumni and current students who attended the event were Aizat Yasmin, a 2020 Fulbright Scholar who graduated from the University of Southern Illinois, and current American Fulbright Scholar Danielle Ward, who is undertaking research at Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
